Today, Tuesday August 30, 2011 a new blog talk radio station was launched. APEX TENNIS in a partnership with 10NIS 4 ALL launched their new internet radio station at 2pm CST. You can listen to this station at www.blogtalkradio.com/APEXTENNIS. The station will host a 30 minute show each Tuesday at 2pm CST hosted by AJ Segneri (APEX TENNIS) and produced by Chris Smith (10NIS 4 ALL).

Men’s Singles – Final

Mardy Fish defeated John Isner 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(4)

John Isner looked as though he was going to dominate the match with the performance he gave in the first set against Mardy Fish. But in the second set Mardy Fish came back to let Isner know he was still in the match. John Isner’s stats in the first set; set a pace with a 76% 1^st service points won and 100% break points saved. But things quickly turned on Isner in the second set for Fish when he came out with 93% first serve points won and a 83% total service points won. By the time the third set rolled around it looked as though Fish had gotten his second wind and took the set to a tie breaker to close the finals out with a win.

Men’s Doubles – Final

S. Lipsky/R. Ram defeated R. Bopanna/K. Vilegen 3-6, 7-6(4), 12-10

S. Lipsky/R. Ram took the finals in doubles to a three set conclusion to finish the Atlanta Tennis Championship in doubles with 100% break points saved and 50% Break points in returns to finish R. Bopanna/K. Vilegen. S. Lipsky/R. Ram delivered 10 aces in the entire match with 2 double faults.

Blake Strode defeated Cecil Mamiit 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(1)

Blake Strode delivered a tremendous match against Cecil Mamiit with power and grace on the court with a comeback in the second and third sets to secure a place in the records for the first US Open National Playoff win.

Olivier Sajous defeated Chris Wettengel 6-4, 2-0 (Retirement)

Olivier Sajous could not complete his match against Chris Wettengel; who retired after the second game in the second set to secure his place in the US Open 2010 Qualifying Tournament. This is the first year of the playoffs in the history of the US Open Series.

John Isner (USA) vs. Kevin Anderson (RSA) Semi- Finals

J. Isner (USA) defeats K. Anderson (RSA) 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-3

As the match between Isner and Anderson begins we look at the weather the players will have to deal with; at a temperature of 120 degrees on the court and the direct sunlight beating down on the stadium court. Isner comes out in the first set with a fierce game winning 6-3. Anderson playing a very competitive match against Isner just had problems with returning Isner’s service game. Isner standing at 6’9” and Anderson standing at 6’8” this match is looking like a battle of the titans. Isner struggled a little bit in the first set with 1^st set return points won. Isner played some great shots to stay strong in the 1^st set against Kevin Anderson (RSA). By the beginning of the 2^nd set Isner was feeling the weather condition. He started to show signs of the heat wearing him down. Anderson stayed consistent in his game strategy in the 2^nd set to win 7-6(7) in the tie breaker to take it to a 3^rd and final set. By the close of the 2^nd set you could see Anderson struggling with the heat; especially when you observe the sweat from his feet coming out of his tennis shoes as he changes direction to catch a return that Isner sent back to him. At the end of the 2^nd set Isner requested a break to change clothes; Anderson followed suit and also changed clothes. With a break which last a total of 8 to 9 minutes both players came out to start the 3^rd set looking a bit refreshed, but that didn’t help Anderson who lost the 1^st game to Isner. Isner picked up his game with his 1^st serve points won to only give Anderson two more games and close out the last set with a 6-3 victory. Isner now reaches his 4^th final this year. Isner now is not looking forward to meeting his next opponent in the finals tomorrow ( which is Mardy Fish), but he has to content with playing doubles next after a short break with James Blake (USA) against S Lipsky (USA) / R Ram (USA) .

Mardy Fish defeats Andy Roddick 7-6(5), 6-3

Mardy Fish came out this evening with a major purpose; to show himself and the crowd at the Atlanta Tennis Championship that he was there for business. With an apparent struggle in his 1^st service percentage of 35%, he made up for it in 1^st service points won at 100%, Break points saved at 100%, all in the first set. He continued his onslaught in the 2^nd set with a 93% 1^st serve points won, and 100% break points won. Andy Roddick came out with a strong service game as usual with 8 aces; 6 of them in the first set, but his groundstrokes just didn’t hold up to Mardy Fish’s returns and groundstrokes.

Lipsky/Ram defeats Blake/Isner 7-6(5), 7-6(5)

S. Lipsky/R. Ram used the fact that J. Isner is trying to recover from his earlier match to win their doubles match against the team of James Blake/John Isner; and in some instances it worked with 7 aces, and a 60% break points won in the entire match. In total service points won they basically broke even with the team of Blake/Isner. S. Lipsky/R. Ram didn’t easy by the team of Blake/Isner taking both sets to a tie breaker. As I mentioned before in a earlier report, this seemed to be a great decision on both S. Lipsky and R. Ram they are doing a great job at supporting themselves in doubles.

R. Bopanna/K. Vilegen v. S. Huss/A. Sa

Bopanna/Vilegen defeats Huss/Sa 7-5, 7-5

Bopanna/Vilegen will meet Lipsky/Ram in the finals of the doubles against S. Lipsky/R. Ram by taking their opponents S. Huss/A. Sa in straight sets in 1:28:59. Bopanna/Vilegen completed their match with 83% 1^st serve points won, and 75% break points saved. The defeat of S. Huss/A. Sa could be contributed to the 8 aces that Bopanna/Vilegen had in the match, with the support of great ground strokes.

BEGAN PLAYING TENNIS JULY 24

Birmingham, AL–July 24, 2010 – More than 1,800 tennis players are expected to take part in the 2010 USTA League Southern Section Championships, which are being conducted on July 24 – August 1 at 11 tennis facilities in and around Birmingham, Ala.

This year’s event has drawn the top tennis 200 teams from throughout Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The teams, which represent various clubs, parks, recreational departments and organizations, have finished at the top of their local leagues and are now vying for a chance to represent the USTA Southern at the 2010 USTA League National Championships.

The annual tournament is considered the world’s largest based on the number of tennis players participating.

Matches will be played at Altadena Country Club, Birmingham Southern College, East Lake Park, George Ward Park, Highland Racquet Club, West Homewood Park, Hoover Country Club, James Lewis Tennis Center, Lakeshore Foundation Tennis Center, Riverchase Country Club and YMCA Mountain Brook. G. William Noble Athletic Complex in Gardendale is also being used as a practice facility. The Sheraton Birmingham Hotel is the official Tournament headquarters.

Tournament Chairman Dodie Hanchett said, “This is our second year in Birmingham and we know we’ll have the same success that we had in our championship tournament last year. With eight days of competitive and fun tennis, Birmingham will again be a great host city.”

This year marks the 30^th anniversary of the USTA League Tennis. Established in 1980, it has grown from 13,000 participants in a few parts of the country in its first year, to over 625,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis program.

The USTA League Tennis was established to provide adult recreational tennis players throughout the country with the opportunity to compete against players of similar ability levels. Players participate on teams in a league format, which is administered by the USTA through its 17 Sections. The league groups players by using six National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) levels, ranging from 2.5 (entry) to 5.5 (advanced). USTA League is open to any USTA member 18 years of age or older. It features Adult and Mixed Doubles divisions, as well as a Senior Division (age 50) and a Super Senior Division (age 60).

Sunday, July 18, 2010 and the temperature well over 80 degrees just walking around, let alone being on a tennis court hitting a ball coming at you at over 100 miles an hour. Nevertheless, Ryan Sweeting (USA) and Michael Shazbaz were going at it on Court #1.

Ryan Sweeting (USA) born in Nassau, Bahamas and resides in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Turned Pro in 2007. He is ranked with the ATP at 116. Michael Shazbaz born in Virginia, USA now resides in Southern California, but is currently going to University of Virginia and is going into his last year in Anthropology. He is not currently ranked with the ATP. His career high ranking as of 10-23-2006 was 833.

As they battled it out on Court #1 it seemed as if the only battling that was going on was the players and the heat. Sweeting dominated Shazbaz winning the first set 6-4 and then winning the second set 6-3, but not without Shazbaz banging the ball back at times to hold serve and save himself from set points and match points at various times during the match.

With stopping every time between points to wipe sweat off their brows it became apparent to Shazbaz that he would have a hard time coming back from a one set lead and 5-3 lead that Sweeting had in the second set; but Shazbaz didn’t care what the lead was he struggled and banged away each shot to hold on for just a little while longer.

Michael Shazbaz played a great match and looks as if he will have a great career on the ATP circuit. Time will only tell; but he is a player to watch. Talking to Michael Shazbaz after the match he stated, “I played a good match. I was dealing with some pain from the power of some of the shots and running down some balls, but overall it was a good match”. When asked what did he have to deal with most in the match and the tournament, he stated “I dealt with the fact that tennis has changed to the banging the ball game from the finesse and ball placement shots”. Michael also stated that he is working on trying to get into the US Open this year; either singles or doubles”. ATL Tennis Championship update 07/17/2010

Qualifying matches scheduled for the Atlanta Tennis Championship, Johns Creek, Georgia have completed. As I covered some of the matches in the Stadium court I was impressed with the professionalism of the tournament staff, officials, ball kids and even the players. The crowd capacity in the first matches were some where around 25%; I am sure as the matches and days go on the crowds will increase. For this being the first round in the qualifying I enjoyed the shot selection, the rallies, and the serving games. With this type of perfection in the game and it being the beginning level of this event, we are in for a marvelous event.

Play to Begin Saturday, 10 a.m., an Hour Later Than Originally Scheduled

ATLANTA, July 16, 2010 – Igor Kunitsyn of Russia was named the top seed in the qualifying for the Atlanta Tennis Championships main draw. The Atlanta event, owned and operated by USTA Southern, will serve as the kick-off to the 2010 Olympus US Open Series.

Play will start Saturday, 10 a.m., an hour later due to weather and a shortened schedule. Gates open at 9 a.m.
Play includes 26 ATP World Tour players who will face off for four slots in the main singles draw. As many as 32 players could have been entered into qualifying, which reduced the schedule. Qualifying play runs through early Monday.
Michael Shabaz, of the University of Virginia, was given a wild card into qualifying.

Taking place from July 19-25, the Atlanta Tennis Championships will feature some of the world’s top ATP players, plus the US Open National Playoffs – Men’s Championship.

Tennis Manitoba appoints Winnipegger Mark Farand to the post of Executive Director.
Tennis Manitoba announced today the hiring of player, coach and administrator Mark Farand as the new Executive Director of the official governing body for the sport of tennis in Manitoba.
“This is the busiest season in the Manitoba tennis calendar,” Farand said. “We’re hosting an International Tennis Federation Junior event July 18-24 at Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club with juniors from a number of countries coming to play in Manitoba. The Manitoba Open runs August 13-22 at the Kildonan Tennis Club and there are many Rogers Rookie Tour events for kids and a run of open tournaments to keep our best senior players engaged through until September. It’s the most exciting time and the best time to be rejoining the sport.”
Farand held a number of positions with Tennis Manitoba in the late 1980’s and 1990’s including Executive Director of Tennis Manitoba. Mark left tennis to pursue other opportunities but held a passion for the sport which he’s happy to again be able to develop. The previous Executive Director of Tennis Manitoba, Jeff Player, resigned suddenly for personal reasons and has returned to his home in South Africa.
Farand will work with Tennis Canada, other provincial tennis associations and the tennis community across Manitoba to grow and support tennis at all levels of the sport.

Youth tennis in Europe is dominated by those born in the first semester with up to 75% of Top100 ranked European Juniors being born in the first semester. Furthermore, there can be up to 4 times more number of players born in January--March versus those born in October-December in the Top100 rankings! This also happens at the country level. This is because the cut-off date for the junior categories (U12, U14, U16, etc) is the 1st of January which favors those born at the beginning ot the calendar year. In the USA, to avoid this injustice, the cut-off date for categories is the month in which the kids turns 13, 15, and 17. The ITF and Tennis Europe are well-aware of this injustice but don´t want to make any changes to the Juniors cut-off dates.

ISNER, BLAKE TO PLAY DOUBLES AT ATLANTA TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Former No. 1 American Player will be at PGA Superstore in Roswell, Ga.

ATLANTA, GA, July 15, 2010 – John Isner, best known for winning the longest tennis match in history at Wimbledon, will join American James Blake in the doubles draw at the Atlanta Tennis Championships. The Atlanta event, owned and operated by USTA Southern, will serve as the kick-off to the 2010 Olympus US Open Series.

Isner battled for 11 hours and five minutes to win his first-round Wimbledon match against Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(7) 7-6(3) 70-68, making him an immediate worldwide celebrity. Isner and Mahut won the ESPY for Best Record Setting Performance Wednesday.

The former University of Georgia Bulldog is projected to be the top seed in singles at the tournament, with a world ranking of No. 18. He won his first ATP World Tour title in Auckland earlier this year.

Blake is the long-time American tennis star who has been ranked as high as No. 4 in the world. Blake has won 10 ATP titles, including the 2006 Indianapolis tournament, which the Atlanta tournament is replacing. He was the top American player in 2006.

Blake’s Special Appearance

Additionally, former US Open quarterfinalist Blake will make a special appearance at the PGA Superstore, 1005 Holcomb Woods Parkway, Roswell, Ga., Sunday, July 18, 1-3 p.m. Blake will meet with fans and have a special session with Atlanta sports personality Sam Crenshaw of WXIA-TV.

Blake started his career in 2000 and has been a Davis Cup stalwart for the American team. Included in People Magazine’s 2006-2007 “Sexiest Man Alive” issue, Blake is also known for off-court accomplishments. He played tennis for two years at Harvard University and co-wrote the autobiography "Breaking Back: How I Lost Everything and Won Back My Life" that reached 15th on The New York Times Best Seller list. The book chronicles Blake’s accident where he ran into a net post and broke his back.

Tournament Director Bill Oakes said, “James Blake is one of our top Atlanta Tennis Championship players and is a great magnet for fans in and out of the tennis world.”

USTA to Refurbish Tennis Courts at the Andrew and Walter Young YMCA

ATLANTA, GA, JULY 12, 2010 – The Atlanta Tennis Championships named Andrew Young, former U. S. Ambassador to the United Nations and noted civic and business leader in Atlanta, the honorary chairman of the inaugural Atlanta Tennis Championships. The Atlanta event, owned and operated by USTA Southern, will serve as the kick-off to the 2010 Olympus US Open Series.

In his role as honorary chairman, Ambassador Young is working with the tournament to reach out to the large and diverse tennis communities throughout greater Atlanta. Atlanta is one of the most vibrant tennis markets in the United States with the highest number of per capita USTA members and the largest USTA Leagues program in the nation. Ambassador Young will also provide introductions on behalf of the tournament to members of the Atlanta business community to help ensure the future success of the tournament in the coming years. Young began playing tennis as a member of Congress, and was a long-time friend of tennis humanitarian and icon Arthur Ashe. Young presided at both Ashe’s wedding and funeral.

“We’re honored to name Andrew Young, one of Atlanta’s most noted residents, who has served this City as its Mayor, has served his country as Ambassador to the United Nations, and continues to serve this community in so many ways, the honorary Chairman of the Atlanta Tennis Championships,” said Rex Maynard, USTA Southern Section President. “With his leadership and guidance, our tournament will be a success for years to come.”

As part of the Olympus US Open Series legacy program, the USTA will refurbish the tennis courts located at the Andrew and Walter Young YMCA, which will also incorporate the USTA Atlanta National Junior Tennis & Learning chapter, run by Bill Olson. The two courts presently on-site will be converted in to four 36-foot courts for kids under 10 years old and one 60-foot court. The conversion of the courts is part of the new teaching philosophy that places younger players on appropriately-sized courts with appropriately-sized racquets and low compression balls. In addition to the court conversion, the USTA will upgrade the court drainage, as well as ensure that all the courts are handicap accessible.

YOUNG RECEIVES FIRST ATLANTA TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS WILD CARD

Atlanta resident has won five professional tournaments

ATLANTA, GA, July 8, 2010 – Hometown pro Donald Young has received the first wild card for the Atlanta Tennis Championships. The Atlanta event, owned and operated by USTA Southern, will serve as the kick-off to the 2010 Olympus US Open Series.

Young won the $50,000 Carson USA Challenger in May. He has also won USTA Pro Circuit events at 2009 Carson, 2008 Sacramento, 2007 Aptos and 2007 USA Futures Arkansas. He advanced to the second round of this year’s Australian Open before losing to ATC player Lleyton Hewitt. His highest ranking was No. 73 in April 2008 and he is presently ranked No. 113.

In 2005, Young became the youngest year-end world No. 1 in the junior rankings at 16 years, 5 months and began competing on the U.S. Pro Circuit. In 2007 he became the youngest player to finish in Top 100 and won the Wimbledon Boys title. The left-hander, who moved to Atlanta in 2004, will turn 21 the Friday of the tournament.

Two other wild cards are still to be awarded.

Taking place from July 19-25, the Atlanta Tennis Championships will feature some of the world’s top ATP players, plus the US Open Men’s National Playoffs Qualifying Tournament.

The Atlanta Tennis Championships will feature a 28-player singles draw and 16-team doubles draw. Three-time ATP titlist Mardy Fish joined committed players John Isner, Marcos Baghdatis, Hewitt, James Blake and Robby Ginepri in the main singles draw. Concurrently, the men’s winners from 16 US Open National Playoffs Qualifying Tournaments will battle for one spot in the 2010 US Open Qualifying Tournament in Flushing, N.Y.

About the Atlanta Tennis Championships

The Atlanta Athletic Club, Johns Creek, Ga., will be the tournament site. The ATP formally awarded the ATP 250 sanction Atlanta Tennis Championships to the USTA Southern Section in December 2009. The Atlanta event will serve as the kick-off to the 2010 Olympus US Open Series.

Atlanta Tennis Players! The Atlanta Tennis Championships invites you to participate in a Tennis Pro-Am Tournament on Sunday July 11, starting at 11AM – just one week before the professional tournament.

The Georgia Professional Tennis Association, an organization of over 200 certified teaching professionals throughout Georgia is hosting this one day event at Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta and The Standard Club in Duluth.

Invite your pro to join your team of (2) Amateur players and (1) teaching professional and sign up for one of only 32 team spots available for this exclusive event.

Entry fee of $50.00 per person includes a day of doubles play with your pro; lunch, refreshments, balls and a chance to win tickets to early round action at the Atlanta Tennis Championships.

Enter your Men's Pro-Am Team or Women’s Pro-Am Team at either the 3.5 or 4.0 level. The final two teams at each level will play the final on-site during the Atlanta Tennis Championships at the Atlanta Athletic Club (July 19 – 25) with the champions receiving (2) tickets to their choice of the ATC semi-finals or finals.

Atlanta ATP Tournament History

The Atlanta ATP tournament ran from 1986-2001 was played at the Atlanta Athletic Club, Johns Creek, Ga., from 1993 to 2001, in late April. From 1986 to 1999 it was called the AT&T Tennis Challenge. In 2000 it was named the Galleryfurniture.com Tennis Challenge and, in 2001, it was called the Verizon Tennis Challenge. Singles champions include former No. 1 players Andy Roddick (2001), Pete Sampras (1998) Andre Agassi (1989, 1991 and 1992) and John McEnroe (1985).

In 2001 the tournament drew 75,097 fans, had a $400,000 purse and was telecast by FOX Sports Net to 114 countries.

Champaign Park District Tennis Center in Champaign Illinois just completed its Junior tournament and is now gearing up for its Adult Open tournament being held this weekend. Yuri Sohn, Director of Tennis (CPDTC) and Director of the tournament is amazed and happy at this years turnout.

Yuri is preparing the seeding and draw to be posted as of 06/25/2010 on the USTA website (TennisLink). Final scores will be posted at on TennisLink by Monday, June 28, 2010.
